Anza-Borrego Desert State Park

After spending a couple of days in Joshua Tree National Park, we drove west and south around the north end of the Salton Sea to Anza-Borrego Desert State Park in southern California and spent two days there.

We went first to the visitors' center and wandered the gardens there admiring the cacti and other desert plants.

We saw several new birds, a Verdin feeding on the Ocotillo blooms and an Anna's Hummingbird.

Finished at the visitors' center we drove west up Culp Valley, following Highway 522, to a primitive campground there where we hiked and spent the night.

The sunset that night was nice but the sunrise next morning was gorgeous (the first two photos are of the sunset, the rest of the sunrise).

After watching the sunrise and having our breakfast we drove back down Culp Valley to Borrego Palm Canyon just north of the visitors' center and hiked the trail there to the oasis.

While in the area we drove around the town of Borrego Springs looking for and photographing the huge metal sculptures which dot the landscape near the town.
