Joshua Tree National Park, Day 1

After a few days in Redlands, California, with friends we headed for Joshua Tree National Park and spent two days there exploring and hiking.  We came in from the northeast but before entering the main area of the park hiked to the 49 Palms Oasis.  The trailhead for that oasis is on the north side of the park on a separate road into the park. We saw a lot of Cacti, many of them in bloom and some early wildflowers as well. Finished with our hike we entered the main area of the park and drove to Cholla Garden and Ocotillo Grove following the Pinto Basin Road and stopping at Belle Campground on the way.  From Ocotillo Grave we drove back north to the Park Road and headed west stopping at Jumbo Rocks, going on up to Keyes View and then back to Hidden Valley where we hiked the short trail.  Finished at Hidden Valley we crossed the road to thee area of Intersection Rock where we watched the rock climbers and the sunset before going on to Cap Rock where we did some star photography before retiring for the night.

We thought the Rattlesnake dance we witnessed was some kind of mating ritual but discovered later that it was probably a contest between two males for dominance.
